Where do I begin? Going through these images, I’m still giddy with the excitement I felt surrounding this birth experience. Brittany, a fellow photographer, was kind enough to let me document the birth of her little guy, right alongside her and her partner, Seth. And what an experience it was!
This birth story begins the afternoon of May 11, 2017. I received a text from Brittany’s best friend using her phone saying ‘Now is a good time to come…’ Just a few minutes before, Brittany thought it would be a few more hours at least, so this came as a surprise! I was driving my own kids home from daycare… so I drove directly to the hospital, met my husband there, threw my kids in his car and ran up to room 603 at Essentia Hospital.
Brittany was experiencing contractions a few minutes apart, but was only able to labor while on her hands and knees. Every time she would change positions, the baby’s heart rate would drop. She was becoming increasingly more tired holding one position, but was powering through each contraction with Seth, her mama, and an amazing team of nurses by her side.
After hours of intense labor, with baby’s heart rate dropping every time she changed positions, Brittany’s midwife came in to discuss the possibility of doing a caesarean section. Soon after, the anesthesiologist came in to prep, and it was official! This baby was coming out! A few quiet moments were had, and the staff came in to prep Brittany for the OR.
Seth and I got suited up and followed Brittany to the operating room. It was a whirlwind from there – the surgeon coming in to discuss what was going to happen, rushing down the hallways to the OR, watching the doctors ‘scrub in’… and then, we waited. Seth and I weren’t sure if we were going to be allowed into the room, or if we were going to watch from the window, so we waited patiently while witnessing the team prep Brittany for her C-section.
Suddenly, a nurse came up to Seth and I and said ‘Ok! Come on in guys!’ We were instructed how to stand behind a tape line on the floor so as not to interfere—and the nurses offered Seth a chair right next to Brittany. The *all female* team at Essentia was amazing! They certainly didn’t have to allow me into the OR, and doing so gave me such an appreciation for what they do!
The way the team worked together was incredible to witness – and at 8:57pm, Otto Elias was brought into the world!
Vitals were taken as Mom & Dad looked on in anticipation…
After all the commotion, the sweet nurse wrapped him up and said ‘here you go, Dad!’
A few snuggles with Mama…
While the nurses tended to Brittany and got her to recovery, Seth and I headed down the hall with the little bundle!
A few moments of quiet and bonding time…
After a bit, it was time to bring big sister Ayva into the room to meet her new brother! Seth went down the hall to announce baby’s arrival…
Seriously… she could not be a more PROUD big sister!💕
The rest of the family soon followed, excited to meet the newest addition. This image cracks me up, everyone wanted a pic of the little guy!
And that’s a wrap! Many thanks to Brittany & Seth for welcoming me into this amazing experience alongside them, to the team at Essentia Health for being so accommodating to me as a birth photographer, even asking me if I was getting the shots/angles I needed (!!!) and to my own family for giving me their blessing to spend so many hours away from them to do what I love!
